Death of dalit activist hots up debate in Gujarat Assembly

The death of dalit activist Bhanubhai Vankar through self-immolation over non-allocation of land to dalit families, again rocked the Gujarat Assembly on Monday with Opposition Congress walking out of the House in a huff.

Bhanubhai Vankar had threatened self-immolation on the premises of Patan collector's office on February 16 last, to press for handing over land allotted to a couple of labourers belonging to dalit community. He implemented his threat in the presence of police, ambulance and fire brigade personnel, who apparently failed to prevent Bhanubhai from taking the extreme step.

On the demand of Congress legislator Sailesh Parmar and three others, a discussion was allowed on the incident. Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said that a SIT has been constituted to find those guilty of preventing the incident. He also said that the failure of the fire brigade should be blamed on the Patan local self government controlled by Congress. "The BJP is trying to politicise the unfortunate incident by making such statements," Sailesh Parmar later told mediapersons.

Mevani protest
Legislator from Vadgaam and Dalit rights activist Jignesh Mevani's speech was cut short as Speaker Rajendra Trivedi ordered his microphone to be switched off and adjourned the House. Mevani and several Congressmen left the House in a huff and addressed the media. Jignesh called the incident a reflection of "anti-dalit" attitude of the state government.

He cited the earlier incidents of Thangadh, where three dalits were killed in police firing in 2012. Though SIT was set up and report submitted, the state is yet to make it public or place it before the House. Jignesh recalled Una flogging of four dailt youths in 2015, after which then chief minister Anandiben Patel had announced a government job, financial package and five acres land for the affected family. So far, none of these commitments have been met. "We do not trust their word or SIT," Mevani said.

Minister Jadeja, however, refuted the charge saying the Vijay Rupani government had met all its commitments made to the family of Bhanubhai after his death. He said that the government had handed over land to two dalit families for whose cause he died, transferred family members in government employment to the place of their choice, proposed a posthumous award in honour of Bhanubhai and installation of his statue in his hometown. Collectors across the state had been instructed to identify dalits allotted government land and give them physical possession of the land.

Papon kiss controversy: Minor girl breaks her silence on the kissing row

Assamese singer Angarag Papon Mahanta or Papon as he is popularly known is in big trouble. He landed in a controversy after a video of him 'kissing' a minor participant of a music reality show went viral on social media yesterday.

In a detailed Facebook post yesterday, Papon apologised and said that it was "just a case of faulty camera angles and an accidental move. And now finally, the minor girl in question and other contestants along with their parents are defending the whole act.

In a video, the minor girl says that Papon didn't do anything with wrong intention. She said, "He kissed me like he would kiss his own child. My mother and my father also kiss me lovingly so there is nothing wrong about it."

Also her father issued a statement which said that Papon is a father figure to his daughter and that there was nothing objectionable in the video that has come under the scanner.

"Papon sir is a mentor and a father figure to my daughter and has always encouraged her to pursue her dreams. He doesn't differentiate amongst the children who are here and gives them equal guidance on pursuing their dreams. What you saw in the video is not intentional. It was just a moment of affection that is being portrayed otherwise. I would request and urge the media to not pursue this further," he told Republic TV in a statement.

Papon accused of sexually abusing minor; contestant's father says he has no objection to the video

Father of the minor reality TV show contestant, who has been allegedly kissed by singer Papon "in an inappropriate manner," says that Papon is a father figure to his daughter and that there was nothing objectionable in the video that has come under the scanner.

Singer and The Voice of India Kids mentor Papon has come under the fire for a video shot in a van that he posted on his Facebook account which shows the contestants of the reality show playing Holi with Papon. After applying colour on the minor contestant, he kissed her. A complaint has been registered against the singer under POSCO act for "violating bodily integrity amounting into sexual assault on a minor girl".

Avocate Runa Bhuyan in her complaint writes, "I am shocked to see the behaviour of the said singer Angarag Papon Mahanta towards a minor girl where he is seen applying colors on a minor girl and inappropriately kissing the said girl. On seeing the video, I am seriously concerned regarding the safety and security of minor girls participating in reality shows across India."

Papon's lawyer Gaurang Narang, on the other hand, claims that the whole incident is being blown out of proportion. In a telecon with India Today he said, "A person will not put anything against him on public domain for anybody to pick it up and make it a complaint. it is very unfortunate, that a lawyer who has done this- maybe it is her mindset. But the fact remains that this kind of compassion, affection should not be misconstrued. The singer is quite disturbed by the whole incident."

On Sunday, Samsung announced its Galaxy S9 flagship smartphone at its Unpacked 2018 event ahead of MWC 2018. Not Boney Kapoor, but hotel staff found Sridevi on the bathroom floor?

Sridevi’s untimely demise has left her family devastated. The nation has joined the family in mourning the loss of an icon. Sridevi suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital. While a gulf-based newspaper reports that she was with Boney Kapoor in her hotel room, a leading daily suggests that a hotel staffer raised alarm after she failed to open the door after multiple doorbells.

 “At around 10.30 pm, she called the room service to request for water. When the server reached her room within 15 minutes, the actor did not attend to multiple doorbells. After a few minutes, fearing something was amiss, the staffer raised an alarm. When we broke into the room, we found her on the bathroom floor. This was around 11 PM. She had a pulse when we found her,” a source from the hotel told a leading daily. The source confirmed that Sridevi was residing alone in her hotel room.

The source added that although Sridevi appeared healthy, even if Sridevi was feeling uneasy she attributed it to the exhaustion after attending all the wedding festivities.

“We rushed her to (Rashid Hospital) where she was declared dead on arrival,” added the source.

Sridevi was apparently in Dubai to attend an auction of her paintings. She had stayed back after husband Boney Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor flew back to India from the UAE.

An autopsy procedure was conducted. An official told a gulf-based newspaper, “Since she is a high profile personality, we can not rush the post mortem procedures.”

The actor was declared dead on arrival and the authorities could not issue a death certificate without conducting autopsy. Anil Ambani’s private chopper was flown out to bring in Sridevi’s mortal remains to the country.

Another report from a gulf-based tabloid claimed that not the hotel staff, but husband Boney Kapoor had found her in a bathtub. He had flown in to Dubai to surprise Sridevi after attending Manmohan Shetty’s birthday dinner in Mumbai.

JBL E25BT review: Notable wireless earphones, budget pricing

The JBL E25BT wireless earphones are best suited for non-audiophiles looking for a high-stamina daily driver.

It is comfortable to wear for extended sessions, and the near-eight-hour battery life makes it a perfect companion for long trips.

Rating:

Since Apple’s AirPods launched in 2016, most OEMs are pushing for compact design wireless earphones — even for affordable ones. JBL is also following this concept, and their latest affordable Bluetooth earphones — the E25BT, have taken inspiration, albeit from Google’s Pixelbuds earphones. Priced at Rs 3,400, these pair of neckband-style earphones make for an interesting proposition for an audiophile.

Build, Design:

The JBL E25BT is a neckband-style pair of earphones, which means it’s not entirely wireless — both the earbuds are interconnected by a wire, which doubles as the neckband. You still have to spend some considerable time tucking them in the carry pouch or pocket. However, the neckband, being braided nylon, is almost tangle-free. There’s an in-line remote control module with three buttons, a microphone and a micro USB charging port, towards the right earbud; whereas the battery module is housed exactly in the centre of the earbuds (in-line with the connecting wire).

The battery module doubles as a weight system while wearing it, thus helping keep the earphones in place. The earbuds are made of plastic, but are small enough to make them fit within the ear canal.

Features, Audio Quality:

The E25BT uses 8mm drivers in each ear with a wide frequency response of 20Hz to 20KHz, and an impedance of 16 ohms. The earphones rely on Bluetooth v4.1 for connectivity.

JBL’s audio accessories are known for exceptional audio quality with a focus on what casual users prefer — Bass — and the E25BT is no exception here. The earphones produce a decent amount of bass, which is surprising for an earphone with such small drivers. You won’t witness thuds, thumps or boom at this price point, but the performance is good enough to mildly satisfy most hardcore audiophiles.

The mids and highs are adequate, although we expected the highs to be more defined. Nonetheless, a bass-heavy audio track that concentrates mids and highs makes using the E25BT a joy to use. There’s no active noise cancellation here, but the in-ear design manages to keep most ambient noises at bay — wind or distant chatter are well shielded. Even when in noisy outdoors, they do a fairly decent job of keeping unwanted disturbances isolated. In short, the noise cancellation is managed by blocking the external sound by cleverly using the snug rubber ear tips.

The earphones are capable of decent audio quality for phone calls; however, the microphone's sensitivity is a bit too weak. Hence, doing calls whilst outdoors isn't a pleasant experience on the E25BT and you have to make sure that the microphone is closer to your mouth.

JBL has incorporated a handy feature for those with multiple audio devices — the ability to connect up to two devices (phones) at once and switch between the two on-demand. All one needs to do is press the play/pause button and the volume button simultaneously for 3 seconds and the earphones switch between the audio sources.

Comfort, Ergonomics:

At 16.5g, the JBL E25BT earphones are almost non-existent, even when wearing for longer sessions, like at the gym or during jogging. When using while daily commuting, the battery weight tends to be a disturbance, and hence the provision for a clip that helps attach the unit on the rear of the collar. A crocodile clip latches the battery module to the rear of the collar and helps protect it from falling off apart. This also reduces the weight stress on the users ears.

However, what irks us is the control module — it's position takes considerable time to get used to. Pressing any button on the controller resulted in dislodging the earbud while we were wearing the E25BT without the crocodile clip, and even sometimes when wearing them.

The controller's buttons aren't well designed either, taking the user's sense of touch to figure out the controls — we often ended up pausing the track while increasing the volume and vice versa. JBL should implement a better design for the controls with more prominent protrusions on the play/pause button to avoid these mishaps.

Battery:

JBL hasn’t mentioned the internal battery's capacity, but we managed to extract an impressive stamina of approximately seven hours, which is pretty close to the company's claimed figure of eight hours. With moderate volume levels and usage sessions, the E25BT can last you four to five days on a single charge. This completely depends on the user's usage, which can vary between usage time, type of audio genre, volume levels and distance between the source.

A tiny LED on the battery module blinks away to notify the user of battery levels. When low on power, the blinks are prominent and you can also hear timely beeps from the speakers. Keeping in mind the universal port compatibility, JBL’s choice of a micro USB port for charging on the controller will certainly appeal to a wider audience. It usually took us around 40 minutes to top it up from the first low battery notification.

Verdict:

If you are looking for a near-wireless pair of earphones with a good performance, the JBL E25BT is a recommendable option under the Rs 4,000 bracket. It will definitely satisfy you with its traditionally known balanced audio quality. It is comfortable to wear for extended sessions, and the near-eight-hour battery life makes it a perfect companion for long trips.

Sridevi had no history of heart attack, says brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor

Sanjay Kapoor landed in Dubai on Sunday morning. Sridevi was in Dubai to attend the marriage function of actress Sonam Kapoor's cousin Mohit Marwah, along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi.

Sridevi’s brother-in-law and actor Sanjay Kapoor has said the whole family was in shock with the sudden demise of the veteran actress. He also said that she had no history of heart ailment.

The actress, 54, died on Saturday night at around 11 pm after suffering a cardiac arrest. In an interview to Khaleej Times, Sanjay said that she was in the hotel room here when it happened. “We are completely shocked. She had no history of a heart attack,” he said.

Sanjay landed in Dubai on Sunday morning. Sridevi was in Dubai to attend the marriage function of actress Sonam Kapoor’s cousin Mohit Marwah, along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi. She exuded elegance in her appearances — photos and videos that were now being shared on social media as her “last”.
Her elder daughter Jahnvi, who is due to make her Bollywood debut, was in Mumbai.
Her body is expected to be flown to Mumbai via a special chartered flight on Sunday evening for the last rites but the timings were not confirmed yet, according to official sources.

Sridevi, who stepped into showbiz at an age of four, is known for performances in Mr India, Nagina, Sadma, ChalBaaz, Chandni, Khuda Gawah, among many others in different Indian languages.

The Padma Shri recipient made a comeback to Bollywood in 2012 with English Vinglish after a long break of 15 years. She was last seen in Mom in 2017.

Sridevi's mortal remains will arrive in Mumbai from Dubai via plane sent by Anil Ambani

Bollywood actor Sridevi Kapoor breathed her last around midnight on February 24, 2018 in Dubai. The 54-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest late night in the city of United Arab Emirates. She was 54. Sridevi's mortal remains, are expected by Cargo or private jet at cargo airport terminal by today according to Mumbai International Airport officials. An autopsy is reported to have been conducted in a Dubai hospital before the actress' mortal is flown back to India. The actress' mortal is kept Al Qusais police station morgue. Indian consulate is making all arrangements for the body to be handed over to the family so that it can be taken to Mumbai. Anil Ambani has been reported to have sent a plane to fly back the veteran's mortal back to Mumbai.

The Sadma star died late in the night in Dubai, where she accompanied her family to attend nephew Mohit Marwah's wedding. Her brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor confirmed the news told indianexpress.com, "Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away. I just landed here, I was in Dubai and now I am flying back to Dubai. It happened roughly around 11.00-11.30. I don’t know more details yet,”

Zee news reports that Sridevi was found unconscious in the hotel washroom where she was staying. She was taken to the hospital immediately and breathed her last on the way.

Born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Sridevi started acting aged four with a role in the Tamil film,Thunaivan. The actress made her Bollywood debut in 1979 with Solva Sawan, but it was Sadma which helped her cement her position as a star in the Hindi film industry.

Sridevi married Boney Kapoor in 1996. She is survived by her husband, Boney Kapoor, and two daughters Jahnvi and Khushi. Janhvi is all set to make her Bollywood debut this year. After marriage, Sridevi took a long break from the movies and returned to the silver screen 15 years later with English Vinglish. She later stunned fans with her performance as a villainous queen in Puli, which also marked her comeback to Tamil cinema after a hiatus of more than two decades. 

Sridevi was last seen in Mom alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna. Her cameo appearance in Shah Rukh Khan's Zero will be her last film. She was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2013.

Other memorable films in which she appeared include Chandni, Himmatwala, ChaalBaaz, Nagina, Mr. India and Gumrah among others.

Nirav Modi PNB scam: PM Narendra Modi breaks silence; here is what he said

Breaking his silence over the Rs 11,400-crore fraud at India's second-biggest public sector bank PNB, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said his government will take stringent action against financial irregularities and not tolerate loot of public money. Days after the fraud allegedly masterminded by diamantaire Nirav Modi came to light, the prime minister asked the management of financial institutions as well as the supervisory bodies to do their job diligently to check such frauds.
"I want to make it clear that this government has been taking strict action against financial irregularities and will continue to take strict action," he said at Global Business Summit organised by Economic Times. "System will not tolerate loot of public money," Modi said.
Nirav Modi, whose diamond creations have draped Hollywood stars such as Kate Winslet and Dakota Johnson, and firms linked to him are alleged to have acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoUs) from one PNB branch in Mumbai between 2011 and 2017 to obtain loans from Indian banks overseas. Investigative agencies have raided Modi's properties and arrested bank employees.
Without naming either the alleged kingpin of the fraud, billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi, or Punjab National Bank, the prime minister said the management of financial institutions, auditors and regulators should perform their duty with full dedication.
"I want to make an appeal to those who have been entrusted with the job of framing rules and policies and maintaining ethics to do their job diligently and with dedication," he said, adding this should specially be followed by those who have been entrusted with the responsibility of supervision and monitoring.

A student of Class VII went online and posted a threat message of raping his teacher and her daughter and this happened in a very famous school of Gurugram. The daughter of the teacher and the boy are in the same class. While in another incident, a student of class VIII wrote a mail to his teacher and asked her to go out with him on a candle light dinner date, ending up in sex.
These two incidents took place last week and the teacher who was threatened has returned to school but her daughter is too afraid to attend the school.
The name of the school has not been disclosed in order to protect the identity of teachers and students.

School issued a statement in which it said,
“This is an incident involving a lower middle school student allegedly indulging in an offensive and highly objectionable cyber prank involving a teacher. A thorough investigation was carried out and stern action was taken, including suspension along with mandated counselling. The school has a zero-tolerance policy towards such acts.”
However, Shakuntala Dhull, the child welfare committee chairperson, has taken the suo motu cognizance of both the incidents. She said,
“A notice will be sent to the school and children. They will be called and asked about the entire incident. Counselling sessions will be taken of the school authorities, including the teachers and kids.”
The leading daily TOI talked to many school principals and majority of them said that it is not just the only incident; it is the dissatisfaction and frustration that is increasing in the students and parents need to play more proactive role with their kids at home.
Ankita Makkar, principal of HDFC School, said,
“Today, kids are exposed to so many gadgets that they tend to get aggressive. We don’t know what they are watching or the sites they are visiting.”
Arti Chopra, principal of Amity International School said,
“The child must have been uncomfortable, secluded at home, and not able to talk to anyone. These are the outbursts of such students who are emotionally not strong. They are not brought up in the right manner by the parents.”
Some other emphasize on making counselling as part of the curriculum.
Sumeet Nath, administrator of institutions Baptist Church Trust Association (BCTA), stated,
“There should be policy-level intervention by the government and all stakeholders, wherein experts counsel students as part of the curriculum and an open dialogue is started with this generation regarding handling of issues, which our conservative society wants to brush under the carpet.”
While this is the opinion of Shweta Sharma, clinical psychologist, Columbia Asia Hospital,
“Teachers are very satisfied in teaching good and bad touch to students but don’t know how to handle kids. Most of the schools in the city don’t have proper counsellors. There are no counselling sessions for teachers. A different approach is needed to teach students today. Teachers should move beyond books and try to know what is going on in the mind of the child.”
Counselling psychologist of Prarambh, Radhika Radhakrishnan, said,
“We need to control what the kids are watching, keep a tab on their internet activity. Parents need to get involved.”

In an effort to provide better security features, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a directive instructing all telecom operators in the country to start issuing 13-digit mobile numbers to customers.
Existing mobile users' numbers will be ported to 13-digits starting from October 1, 2018.
The deadline for completion of the same has been set for December 31, 2018.
"The directive from DoT had come on January 8, 2018, post which we started work on it," said a senior BSNL official.
The telecom operator further said, "It is decided that 13-digit M2M (Machine-to-machine) numbering plan will be implemented from July 1, 2018. From this date onwards, all new M2M mobile connections will be allocated 13-digit numbers only. Migration of existing 10-digit M2M numbers will start latest by 1 October 2018 and shall be completed by 31 December 2018."
Further confirming the development, service provider, Bharti Airtel Ltd, in a written response to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) consultation paper on 'Spectrum, Roaming and QoS related requirements in Machine-to-Machine Communications', said, "DoT has already approved a 13-digit numbering series for SIM-based M2M devices which will co-exist with the prevalent 10-digit mobile numbering scheme to be allocated for the Unified Licence (Access Service Authorization)."
Ministry of Communication in a letter written to TRAI informed, "13-digit numbering scheme has been approved for SIM-based M2M devices."
M2M sim refers to the technologies that enable devices and sensors or things to communicate with each other and with other Internet-enabled devices and systems. Simply, the regular day-to-day GSM sims that can be transferred from one phone to another.

6 big states show 'Modi magic' may not last till 2019

Infighting in state units, disgruntled allies and disappointed voters may make things difficult for the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

With a little more than a year to go for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, partiesare already going full throttle with poll campaign. Launching a bike rally from Jind in Haryana on February 15, BJP president Amit Shah kick-started the battle for 2019. But the big question is whether Modi's magic will work again and the party will be able to retain the same kind of popularity.
Going by the ongoing political scenario, the road to 2019 doesn't appear to be as smooth for the BJP. In 2014, out of the 248 seats in six major states, the NDA managed to get 224. But this time around, it may not be a cakewalk for them.

Gujarat
In the Assembly elections held last year in the home state of PM Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, the party got a major scare from the Congress even though it managed to retain power. Out of the 182-member Assembly, BJP won only 99 seats, facing a loss of 17 seats as compared to 2012. However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had won all the 26 parliamentary seats in Gujarat.
Quite clearly, the 2014 Modi wave seems to have waned in Gujarat, especially among farmers and young rural voters. The party tried to win back their support by reaching out to farmers, rural workers and women with a number of populist schemes. Whether this will reap poll harvest for the party will be known only in 2019.
Rajasthan
The results of the recent by-polls held in Rajasthan shows that BJP is not in a strong position. The party suffered defeat in all three seats - two parliamentary and one legislative assembly. The BJP's problem is getting compounded with infightings within the state unit. Disgruntled members have been demanding a change in the state BJP leadership. And this isn't good news for the party, especially ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won all 25 seats in Rajasthan. However, with increasing rebellion against Vasundhara Raje and the waning Modi wave, 2019 seems unlikely to be a cakewalk for the BJP, not to mention the fact that the Congress has already started making inroads.


Uttar Pradesh
In the country's most-populous state, the saffron wave swept the state a year ago. The BJP ended its 15-year exile and stormed to power with a massive mandate in the Assembly elections and installed Yogi Adityanath as the Uttar Pradesh chief minister.
But here too, the public sentiment seems to be changing, especially as the party is being increasingly seen as anti-Dalit and anti-Muslim. The BJP, along with ally Apna Dal, had bagged 73 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 and polled nearly 43 per cent of votes. In the parliamentary elections to be held next year, the performance of the Yogi government, the Ram Mandir (Ayodhya) issue and non-BJP-non-Congress political alliances will play crucial roles. The by-elections to be held next month in Phulpur and Gorakhpur parliamentary constituencies will in all likelihood give a sense of the people's mood. The BJP had won both of these seats in 2014.

Bihar
RJD stalwart Lalu Prasad Yadav’s imprisonment can lead to new political equations in the state. It can't be ruled out that leaders like Ram Vilas Paswan - who is also known as political weather scientist - Union minister Upendra Kushwaha and former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi may part ways with NDA. If that were to happen, it will land the BJP in a piquant situation. To add to that, ever since Nitish Kumar left the mahagathbandhan and joined the NDA, many JD(U) leaders are miffed with him. This can lead to some disgruntled JDU leaders switching over to the RJD. In the 2014 elections, the BJP and allies had won 31 out of 40 seats in Bihar.


The state will also go to Assembly elections at the end of this year. The Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government is facing anti-incumbency in considerable measure and it will be one of the dominant factors in the forthcoming elections.
Poll observers are confident that the road for BJP will not be as smooth as it was in 2014. The BJP got 27 out of 29 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, the fact that the Congress in Madhya Pradesh is a divided house with three factions could prove to be a golden opportunity for the BJP.

Maharashtra

After long-standing threats, the Shiv Sena has finally broken its alliance with the BJP in the state. With that the Sena has become the first major party to end its alliance with the BJP since Modi became prime minister in 2014.
This makes the situation worse for the BJP ahead of the 2019 elections. In 2014, the NDA secured 42 out of 48 seats. Of these, the Shiv Sena had won 18.

PNB scam: Bank closed all options to recover dues by going public, says Nirav Modi

MUMBAI: Nirav Modi, the kingpin behind the largest banking scam in the country's history, has virtually wrung his arms in the air saying PNB's overzealousness has shut the doors on his ability to clear the dues, which he claimed is much lower than the bank has gone public with.
In a letter Modi wrote on February 15/16 to the PNB management, a copy of which PTI has seen, he pegged the amount his companies owe to the bank under Rs 5,000 crore.
"The erroneously cited liability resulted in a media frenzy which led to immediate search and seizure of operations, and which in turn resulted in Firestar International and Firestar Diamond International effectively ceasing to be going-concerns.
"This thereby jeopardised our ability to discharge the dues of the group to the banks," Modi, who left the country along with his family in the first week of January, wrote in the letter.
"In the anxiety to recover your dues immediately, despite my offer (on February 13, a day before the public announcement, and on 15,) your actions have destroyed my brand and the business and have now restricted your ability to recover all the dues leaving a trail of unpaid debts,"he said.
The letter also refers to the extended discussions between him, and between his representatives and the bank officers and also his emails on February 13 and 15, 2018.
It can be noted that PNB, the second largest state-run bank, had on February 14 informed the exchanges of detecting USD 1.77 billion fraud at its Brady House branch in Horniman Circle area of south Mumbai and named the firms led by Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi's Gitanjali Group and some other diamond and jewelry merchants as suspects.
The bank has also filed criminal complaints with CBI and the ED, both of which launched nationwide searches on dozens of offices and residences of the alleged fraudsters.
The bank has named Modi's brother, his American wife Ami, and uncle Choksi besides some others in the FIR.
On the over Rs 11,000-crore loss claimed by PNB in the FIR, Modi said, "as you are aware, this is entirely incorrect and the liability of the Nirav Modi Group is substantially less. Even after your complaint was filed, in good faith I wrote to you saying please sell/allow me to sell Firestar Group, or their valuable assets, and recover the dues not just from Firestar Group, but also from the three firms."
Valuing his domestic business at around Rs 6,500 crore, he said "this could have helped reduce/discharge the debt to the banking system," but quickly added that this is not possible as all his bank accounts have been frozen and assets have been sealed or seized.
He goes on to state that PBN had time and again acknowledged that "the buyers credit facility has been extended by it to the three partnership firms since several years; that there has been no default on the part of any of these firms over all these years; that money has gone through PNB over all these years for the repayments of the advances given by the overseas bank branches under the buyers credit.
"That Firestar International and Firestar Diamond International have never been in default to any bank, and the bankers are fully secured".
He also states that PNB has over the years been earning bank charges to the tune of crores of rupees on the buyers credit facility extended by PNB to the three partnership firms and that PNB has extended the money to the firm's buyers as well from where also it has been receiving full payments, with interest and on time all, these years.
On the valuables that CBI/ED searches yielded Rs 5,649 crore, he said "these, and other assets of the group and the three firms could have settled all the amounts due to banks. However, now that stage appears to have passed."
He concluded by requesting the bank to "be fair, and support my efforts to make good all the amounts that are found due by my group to all banks."
Owning up everything, he said the bank has wrongly named his brother, who is not at all concerned with the operations of the three firms or other companies.
"My wife is not connected with any business operations at all and she has been wrongly named. My uncle is also wrongly named in this complaint since he has an independent and unconnected business and none of them are aware or concerned with my dealings with your bank."
"Whatever may be the consequences I may face for my actions, the haste was, in my humble submission, unwarranted," Modi conludes and makes has requested the bank to permit payment of salaries to 2,200 employees from the balance lying in the current accounts.

Salman Khan-Arijit Singh controversy: Here's what 'Sultan' actor has to say about the singer's apology letter

Arijit Singh has apparently sung "Jag Ghoomeya" song in Salman Khan's "Sultan" initially, but it has been removed.

Singer Arijit Singh's public apology to Salman Khan came as a shock to everyone and led to several speculations behind the letter. The "Sultan" actor was recently asked about it and his reply might hurt the singer again.
According to Press Trust of India, when Salman was asked about the apology letter, he snapped twice before completing the question: "Who is that?" He later said that if any song has not been taken by the makers in the film, then one should not get upset about that.
"In every film there are lot of singers who sing and director and producer who make the choice of who is going to be the best voice for the film. One voice was mine but that was also rejected, so why get so upset and so hurt. This is life," Salman told PTI.
"There should be a day when a person (actor) should say don't sing or sing. Smart ones don't turn out bright. Then smart comments ... post... they don't... you come to know the intentions," the superstar added.
Controversy sparked between the two when Arijit posted an apology to the "Dabangg" actor on Facebook and pleaded not to remove a version of a song of him in "Sultan." However, later he had deleted the post.
Arijit had apparently lent his voice to "Jag Ghoomeya" in the Ali Abbas Zafar film, but it was reportedly re-recorded in Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's voice. Also, Salman has his version of this song. It was said that the apology letter was in connection to an incident during Star Guild Awards 2014.
Salman was co-hosting the event when Arijit was called on stage to receive an award for the song "Tum Hi Ho." The singer was apparently asleep when his name was announced and reacted only after a while.
When he went on the stage to receive his award, Salman jokingly said: "So gaye the!" (Did you fall asleep?) Arijit responded to the joke saying, "Aap logone sula diya yaar" (You guys made me fall asleep). To this the "Sultan" actor retorted that such slow songs would make anyone fall asleep. While neither Salman nor Arijit looked annoyed by the jokes on the stage then, the actor was reportedly miffed with the singer due to the incident. 

Teacher-student sex scandal: Biology teacher caught half naked with teen in car, faces sexual battery charges

The teacher, who admitted to having sex with the student on two separate occasions, has been fired from her school.

A South Carolina teacher was reportedly caught half naked with her student in a car and is facing charges of sexual battery.

A Greenville County Sheriff's deputy found the high school biology teacher with the teen student in a car on Thursday, February 15 and was arrested subsequently, news station WYFF reported.

The Greer High School educator Elizabeth Heaton Taylor and the teen were found in the woman's white Ford Explorer on Holland Road in the town of Simpsonville.

The report also mentioned that during the investigation, Taylor gave the authorities a fake name initially, but later admitted that she and the student had sex on two separate occasions.

Taylor was booked on charges of sexual battery with a student between 16 and 17 years old and giving false information to police. She is being reportedly held on a $10,250 bond.

Elizabeth Heaton is a newly married woman who got hitched to Alex Taylor in Greenville, on July 2017, according to their wedding announcement in The State.

"Upon making contact with the occupants inside the vehicle, deputies observed a male, later discovered to be a student at the school in which Taylor was employed, and Taylor, who was partially clothed," Sergeant Ryan Flood told FoxCarolina in an e-mail.

Taylor was fired from her job at Greer High School on February 16, the district spokeswoman Beth Brotherton told Greenville Online. In the Greer High School website, Taylor's profile in the science department section has also been removed.

According to an article in the school's newspaper, Taylor began teaching at Greer High School in the fall of 2015. The article mentions Taylor as a biology and earth science teacher.

PNB Scam: Mehul Choksi imported 750 kg of gold without paying a rupee in duty, under IT dept scanner since 2012

Mumbai: The PNB scam is proving to be the proverbial iceberg – there is more to it than what is protruding above the surface. For instance, there are shocking revelations about one of the absconders in the PNB fraud, Mehul Choksi, who was under the scanner of the Mumbai Income Tax Department in 2012 for import duty violations

Sample this. Among Choksi’s group firms, Gitanjali Gems imported 750 kg of gold items, Gitanjali Jewellery imported 171 kg and Gili India Ltd imported 182 kg. But none of them paid a single rupee as duty! These details have been culled out of replies received under an RTI query of activist Manoranjan S. Roy.

After the Mumbai Customs’ shocking revelations, Roy checked further and learnt that Gitanjali Jewellery Ltd. was not even registered with the Registrar of Companies. ‘‘There are no records available of this company’s existence, yet it succeeded in importing 171 kg of gold undetected,” Roy said.

When Roy raised the matter with the Mumbai Customs Department, they washed off their hands, claiming it was not within their jurisdiction to ensure whether any gold-diamond importer was registered with the registrar of companies or MSTD. They contended that their jurisdiction pertained to collection of customs duty, Roy said.

I-T probe found 4,900 cr in unexplained funds

More ghosts have been resurrected by the probe into the PNB scam. It is learnt that there were glaring Income Tax violations by the Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi group of companies as well. The IT Department had swooped down on the group in 2017 and submitted a detailed probe report to the Central Board of Direct Taxes and the finance ministry. The highlight of the report was that money to the tune of Rs 4,900 crore remained unexplained to agencies.

A news portal (India Today.com) has accessed the I-T probe report, which says that the group was accepting “on money/cash” against sale of jewellery/diamonds which was over and above the sale consideration recorded in the book of accounts. The total detection on this account alone was Rs 252.48 crore.

Also, the group received Rs 284 crore during March 2013-April 2014 from Jade Bridge Holdings, a Cyprus-based company and Forcom Worldwide Investment Ltd, a Mauritius-based company, by way of share capital and high share premium. The source of these funds and creditworthiness of these foreign entities remain unexplained. In yet another transaction, the flagship company, Firestar International, received foreign funds to the tune of Rs 271 crore from Singapore-based Islington International Holdings, whose beneficial owner is stated to be Nirav Modi’s sister Purvi Mehta. The portal says the assessee was not able to provide necessary supporting documents in support of creditworthiness of either Purvi Mehta or Islington International Holdings. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Punjab National Bank's retired Deputy Manager, Gokulnath Shetty and two others in a multi-crore bank fraud case, officials said on Saturday.

"CBI has Shetty, Single Window Operator Manoj Kharat and authorised signatory of the Nirav Modi Group of Firms, Hemant Bhat," a CBI official said.

PNB's retired Deputy Manager and Operator are named in the CBI FIR along with 10 directors of the three private firms namely Krishnan Sangameshwaran, Nazura Yashjaney, Gopal Das Bhatia, Aniyath Shivraman, Dhanesh Vrajlal Sheth, Jyoti Bharat Vora, Anil Umesh Haldipur, Chandrakant Kanu Karkare, Pankhuri Abhijeet Varange and Mihir Bhaskar Joshi.

According to the FIR, it was alleged in the PNB complaint that Gitanjali Gems, Gili India Ltd and Nakshatra Brand Ltd and their directors in connivance with Sethi and other officials had caused an alleged loss of Rs 4,886.72 crore to the bank.

The CBI on Friday registered fresh FIRs against 10 directors of the Gitanjali Group of companies under charges of criminal conspiracy and cheating of Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act against Mehul Choksi, the Managing Director of Gitanjali Gems Ltd based at Mumbai's Walkeshwar.

The FIR has also named two former bank employees who were said to be directly involved in the fraudulent transactions.

Additionally, three companies of Gitanjali Group were also named in the CBI FIR registered on Thursday for causing alleged loss of Rs 4,886.72 crore.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday launched a nation-wide raid on the offices, showrooms and workshops of billionaire diamond trader Nirav Modi.

The multi-pronged action came a day after the Punjab National Bank admitted to unearthing a fraud of Rs 11,515 crore involving Nirav Modi's companies and certain other accounts with the bank's flagship branch (Brady House Branch) in Mumbai and its second largest lending window in India.

The fraud, which includes money-laundering among others, concerns the Firestar Diamonds group in which the CBI last week booked Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal Modi and their uncle Mehul Choksi.

Giving a big boost to India's port, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to unveil the Fourth Container Terminal (FCT) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai. On Sunday, PM Modi will visit Mumbai to inaugurate the container and with this JNPT is set to almost double its handling capacity. The capacity at the JNT will increase to a gigantic 24 lakh containers per year with the addition of the new FCT. The interesting bit is that this is just only Phase-1; after phase 2 is completed, the Port Trust will be able to hold a huge 100 lakh containers per year!
The development of this Fourth Container Terminal has been carried out by Design, Built, Fund, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT). It was back in October 2015 when PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the project. The entire cost of the project is estimated at Rs 7915 and the time for it is set for a concession period of 30 years. However, the phase 1 of the project has been completed in record time.
One of the unique features of this terminal is that it will have deepest berths which will enable it to handle “Mother Ships”. The terminal will be able to handle some of the biggest container ships from a quay length of 1 km. The cranes at the Terminal can reach 22 rows wide or greater. It will be able to handle three container ships at one go with sufficient yard space.
Speaking on the issue was Union Minister Nitin Gadkari who said that the phase 1 of the terminal has been made in record time. He said, "Logistics play a major role in developing an economy and our government is committed to provide world-class logistics and infrastructure facilities in order to flourish trade."
