who was a Brahmin, in an indecent manner. Recently, Sanjay Leela Bhansali faced similar situation during the shoot of Padmavati, which was later renamed as Padmaavat and hit the screens amid massive protests.
Now, Suresh Misra, founder president of Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha (SBM), has said he has come to know that there are some scenes, including a song, that allegedly depict Rani Laxmibai as having a "love affair" with an Englishman. Notably, the shooting for Manikarnika has been going on in Rajasthan.
Misra, who is also a secretary of Congress unit in Rajasthan, said, SBM has learnt that some portions of the movie have been picked up from 'Rani', a book by (London-based author) Jaishree Misra. Misra told The Indian Express that the the book was banned by Uttar Pradesh government. He also questioned as to why filmmakers are making a movie based on the "content from a banned book”.
Misra further said if their concerns are not addressed, the SBM will oppose and disrupt the shooting of the film in Rajasthan.
The book had mentioned a romantic relationship between Rani Lakshmibai and British officer Robert Ellis. It was banned in Uttar Pradesh in February 2008 by the then Mayawati-led government, according to IE.
The outfit has sent a letter to Manikarnika producer Kamal Jain. The letter was sent on January 9 but there has been no response, said Misra.
Misra said that "Jhansi ki Maharani" Laxmi Bai was a Brahmin and therefore the organisation and the community has certain queries as it is related with Brahmin sentiments and emotions. Meanwhile, Shri Rajput Karni Sena’s national president Mahipal Makrana said if Misra has objected to the movie, they stand with him. Makrana said Rani Laxmibai is Brahmin's pride and is also their pride too.
Kangana is playing the title role of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi in the movie. Nihaar Pandya is making his Bollywood debut with the film and will be seen essaying the pivotal role of Baji Rao II. The movie features other actors like Atul Kulkarni and Danny Denzongpa. Manikarnika is produced by Kamal Jain and Zee Studios and directed by Kriah Jagarlamudi.
